History

Here, at Egliano’s area, around the Palace of the Homeric king Nestor, we have been cultivating a vast range of unique olive varieties for 3500 years.
The thousands of clay tablets in Linear B' script found in that particular area illuminate the predominance of the olive tree in the ancient world and its use as a symbol of prosperity, peace, fertility and fruitfulness. It is widely accepted that the olive was of paramount importance in antiquity.
Thus, during the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, the victorious were crowned with an olive branch and were given olive oil as a prize for their victory.
During Antiquity, the olive oil or, according to Homer, the “liquid gold”, has been much more than mere food: it was considered a symbol of health, power and strength.
